Vapormatt Wet Blasting

Since the early 1970s, ABC-CLEAN has supplied wet blasting systems to Danish industry. Vapormatt is a family business that started with Norman Ashworth in the early 1950s. He was one of the pioneers in the development of the wet blasting process. The company is now run by the family and is the absolute leading supplier of industrial wet blasting systems.

Wet blasting is characterized by using a blasting medium together with water. The water acts as a buffer between the blasting medium and the surface, resulting in less surface deformation than a comparable dry blasting process. Furthermore, degreasing fluid or rust protection can be added to the water.

What is wet blasting and how does it work?

Wet blasting is a closed process where the blasting media, water, and a mild degreaser are contained in a tank.

There are more than 100 different types of blasting media, the most common being glass beads, aluminum oxide, and plastic granules. Each blasting media has its advantages, and the media is selected based on the specific task.

A special low-pressure pump is located in the sump, which feeds a mixture of blasting media and water/degreaser to the process gun.

Compressed air is supplied to the process gun, and it is only at the nozzle of the process gun that the blasting media, water/degreaser are accelerated.

After the cycle is complete, the part is rinsed with a rinse gun. This rinse gun can either be connected to tap water or a closed circuit where water from the system's filter is used.

Benefits of wet blasting

Grease, oils, burrs, rust, and other contaminants are quickly removed without damaging coated surfaces. By adjusting the mixing ratio of abrasives, water, and air pressure, paint and other coatings can be removed quickly, also without damaging the substrate.

Surfaces are simultaneously polished and, if necessary, prepared for further production processes such as painting or PVD coating. If desired, cutting edges can be deburred for durability, and surfaces can be peened for extra strength.

Unlike dry blasting, the presence of water reduces heat and friction, minimizing surface damage and deformation, making it ideal for delicate materials.
